Extremely Disappointing Experience – Food Quality and Hygiene Need Serious Attention

We usually visit Ulavacharu in Sunnyvale for our Thursday buffet, and it has consistently been a great experience. Unfortunately, it was not operating on the day we visited, so we decided to try Urban Grill instead. What followed was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we have had.

We arrived around 7:30–8:00 PM, during dinner hours, and the restaurant was surprisingly empty. We decided to give it a chance, but our first impression of the buffet was already disappointing. The food looked as though it had been sitting out for a long time, and there were very limited vegetarian options. There were hardly any vegetarian starters apart from some spring rolls, which were cold and unappetizing.

When I started eating, I realized that the food was extremely cold. I politely brought this to a waitress’s attention, and she said she would look into it. However, the most concerning incident happened shortly afterward.

As a vegetarian, my options were already limited, so I took some saag and paneer butter masala. After taking a bite of the saag, I immediately noticed an unpleasant smell and realized that it’s spoiled. I informed the staff, and they promptly removed both my plate and the entire dish from the buffet counter. They then brought out what they described as a fresh replacement from the kitchen.

The fact that a dish that’s already spoiled was being served to customers is extremely concerning. Toward the end of the meal, the staff acknowledged that the food was stale. This is not a minor issue or simply a matter of personal taste. Food quality and safety should be the bare minimum expected of any restaurant.

After this incident, I completely lost my appetite and was reluctant to touch anything else on the buffet. My husband, who eats non-vegetarian food, continued eating because we did not want to leave without having a meal, but even his experience was far from satisfactory. The food was cold, and the overall selection and quality were disappointing.

The restroom was another major disappointment. It was in an extremely poor state of hygiene, and even basic facilities, including toilet seat covers, were missing. It was honestly one of the worst restroom experiences I have had at a restaurant in the Bay Area.

What made the experience even more frustrating was the lack of attention to regular diners. During our visit, the staff appeared preoccupied with an influencer who was there filming content. They were busy attending to her and recording videos, while our concerns about the food seemed to receive little attention. As paying customers, we expected the same basic level of care and attention.

To their credit, the staff eventually acknowledged the issue and offered not to charge us for the meal. However, waiving the bill does not undo the experience or address the underlying problem. We did not visit the restaurant looking for free food. We went there expecting a decent dinner, and instead, we encountered cold food,a dish that’s already spoiled, poor restroom hygiene, and an overall lack of attention to diners.

I am sharing this review because I would not want another customer to go through the same experience. A restaurant can have an off day, but serving food that’s  spoiled is a serious concern that deserves more than simply removing the dish and waiving a customer’s bill.

I sincerely hope the management takes these concerns seriously and improves its food freshness, buffet maintenance, restroom hygiene, and attention to customers. Based on this experience, I would not recommend the dinner buffet in its current state.

Excellent food, they ran out of dessert that I was looking forward to and they brought out more for me!!!
